The best music I’ve heard for ages. This has been stuck in my head all week.

“The loose direction of the almost atonal melody is loose: Body Weather teases conformity, securing itself in the realms of originality. Flavours comparable to the likes of Neon Indian and Broadcast combined develop a summery haze of sound. This is a great track, inspiring the mind to wander.” - Jenner Cole (Vulture Hound)

Bon Iver - Calgary

Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math

Neither Mancunian, nor orchestral, Manchester Orchestra are from Atlanta and play loud/quiet grunge. Nothing new then, but fans of the Pixies and Weezer love them.

Having blown us away with the previous album, what looks like being a more refrained record (but still full of soul), should catapult this band into stardom.

“This song is simply brilliant. It’s everything I love about Manchester Orchestra and I’m really pleased. I was excited for the new record before. Now I cannot wait.”

(Song: I Will Remain)

The five-piece are scorched with a sound that combines a woozy, day-dreaming California with a muscular updating of English pastoral folk; the cultured, straw-scratched vocal of Matthew Hegarty backed by tender vocal harmonies and rolling banjo lines.

The band are building a committed live following in London – selling out the Lexington with their first ever headline show earlier this year. They have recently finished a UK tour with Mumford & Sons and released there second EP ‘Kingdom Of Your Own’ in November selling out The Borderline for the launch.

“The band weave a delightful web, most obviously from some beautifully written, impeccably arranged songs and Hegarty’s aforementioned vocals, but also Lindsay West’s perfectly complementary backing vocals, some lively banjo and suitably understated accordion.”

Visions of Trees are two London musicians who became friends over the summer of 2009 and began recording together in a local basement shortly afterwards. Their sound is a disembodying reconfiguration of tribal-electronica, awash in echoing techno-ambience with vocals that range between cavernous and soothing. Good for meditation, catharsis, transcendance, epiphany, celebratory dance or any number of things that won’t easily let you split your attention.

“Visions of Trees are Joni and Sarah, a brilliant two-piece from London who make hazy tropical pop music that shares a similar woozy electronic mood to Teengirl Fantasy, only swamped in Liz Fraser-esque vocals.”

(Song: The Wilhelm Scream)

Blake provides a masterclass in the use of space and silence to create a sense of emotional heaviness. With just a brush of piano, the clack of percussion, and a ghostly aura of sub bass, the downbeat emotion of the record more than warrants attention. Truly astounding.

Make sure you have this in your arsenal of albums.

“‘One thing the world really doesn’t need is another straightforward singer-songwriter. It could do with invention and originality, with music that sounds utterly of the moment, in that you struggle to imagine it being made at any point in time before now: precisely the qualities James Blake has.”

‘Demons’, the new single from the Northamptonshire four-piece extravagantly named Fenech-Soler, is a sparkly-but-classy sequinned cocktail dress of dance-pop.

“‘Demons’ is another catchy chorused number with pounding dance beats and an especially prominent bass which underpin multiple layers of synths and infectious ‘ooh’ backing vocals throughout.”

(Song : Wise People)

Pebble perfectly balances progression with familiarity for a listen that’s never anything less than exciting.

For their track “Wise People”, Lemuria have made the vocals distorted and echo-y, the guitar and bass are far fuzzier and the drums are louder and more distant. It fits the band’s aesthetic like a glove.

I want to go too.

I want to go too.

Remix of the day: Jamie xx

(Song : Adele - Rolling In The Deep)

Adele gets her track reworked by one of the best UK producers around. It’s a win-win situation.

Jamie xx brings out the brooding passion of the original and created a re-interpretation that reminds us just how hypnotizing Adele’s powerful voice can be.

“Handclaps, dubby basslines and marching band drums all complimenting Adele’s disarmingly honest vocal delivery to create what’s without a doubt going to go down as one of the best tracks this year.”

(Song - Arena)

Suuns have no doubt ingested a lot of art rock, the Montreal group’s minimalist rhythms are equally informed by Joy Division, Suicide and Can, often wrapped in a noisy squall of droning guitars and pulsing synths. Add to this Ben Shemie’s breathy, paranoid sing/speak, and there are times that it seems like Suuns are about to drive over a sonic cliff. But there’s actually a great sense of restraint at play. We were enveloped in Suuns’ dark and thrilling post-punk from the first listen, never to return.

“Canada’s Suuns are a creepy bunch. Or, at least, on the evidence of their super debut LP (entitled ‘Zeroes QC’), it’s safe to assume they are. The opening ‘Armed For Peace’ begins as a John Carpenter-esque crawl of synthesised doom, before erupting into a tripping guitar motif that suggests there’s a fair degree of axe experimentation to come. Indeed, there’s plenty of chug in the tracks that follow, but it’s all done with a pleasing impishness and willingness to let ideas rule, be they beaten art rock riffs or incessant handclaps. This could already be one of the debuts of the year.”

“Chemistry is a song of two halves....

Tall Ships - Chemistry

“Chemistry is a song of two halves. The instrumental opening, with its stop-start time signatures, math-rock guitars and epic percussion, eventually gives way to a sweet lyrical refrain which again, shows a new side to the band. Layered, harmonising vocals - repeating the lines, “There is nothing but chemistry here and with that in mind we have nothing to fear. This applies to all I hold dear and with that in mind all is beautifully clear” - float along over a constantly building and swelling soundscape. Magical stuff indeed.”

This track can be found on the band’s recently released second EP entitled ‘There Is Nothing But Chemistry Here’.

(Song - All Fall)

Raw, dark and driving indie rock from this Teeside band who have been treating us to sporadic releases for the past couple of years. They are an intense live band. Kingsley Chapman screams with all the gusto of a young Henry Rollins yet gazes vacantly at the baying crowd with all the vulnerability of a very troubled Ian Curtis.

They have been releasing singles for a while, but never an album. Now this band feel that they are finally ready, and are due to release their debut album in March. A record that is much hyped and anticipated.

“This quite simply is music for the current generation” - Josh Miller (Moon & Back Music)

2. Sleigh Bells

(Song - Infinity Guitars)

This band have caught the ear of everyone that matters in the US and the UK. Sleigh Bells make music that hits so hard, and in such a satisfying way. With an album of amazing tracks (entitled ‘Treats’) already in shops, they can only get bigger. Justified hype at its best.

“Sleigh Bells would be perilously close to a trendy joke if their 30-minute-long debut album wasn’t such a marvellous racket.” - Gareth Grundy (The Observer)

3. Best Coast

(Song - Boyfriend)

With album Crazy For You released mid-2010, Beth and co. found a fair few fans. Now they are blowing up galactically. Appearances on talk shows, and friendships with the likes of Kanye West (with whom Beth has contributed vocals to a recent song), have only fuelled the hype tornado that trails this band. They should easily continue to pack out tents and venues worldwide in 2011.

“‘ll place my bet that ‘Crazy for You’ will sound pretty great all damn year, and beyond” - Larry Fitzmaurice (Pitchfork)

Three bands who deserve to blow up bigger

….
